Afghan Memories

An Oral-History Project

In a 2 x 2 meter recording studio, people talk to each other about their very personal memories of home in Afghanistan or Iran. The result is a recording of stories, memories and snapshots that provide a diverse view of a region that we know exclusively as a place of war through the media. The oral history project was conducted in 2016 and 2018 as part of a multi-year research effort by the Afghanistan newsgroup.

All these conversations form the Afghan Memories, a growing archive of eyewitnesses that provides a multi-layered view of life in a region that no one can describe better than the people who come from there themselves.

„Afghan Memories is an example of how social reconciliation can begin. By telling their stories, Afghans learn to rebuild trust, speak openly about their wounds, and thus actively take control of their destiny and future despite all the uncertainty. Any peace process in Afghanistan must have this approach to be truly sustainable.“
